Can't connect to Shaw services in new location.

Recently moved to a new place with a friend who is already using shaw services. Plugged my own Hitron router I got previously from another Shaw service under another account into the cable outlet in my new room. Downstream frequency was successfully locked onto but is unable to lock onto an upstream frequency. Just wanted to know if the problem is the router not compatible with service/address that is not under the original service or is the cable outlet in my room not activated? If it is the latter, how should I go to activate it?
