I recently switched from an old starchoice satelite and receiver to a new shaw satelite and HDPVR system. When I turn on my tv the picture does not take up the whole screen like my last one seemed to. I have a Samsung 1080p television.
Congrats on the new system! If you're hooked up with an HDMI cable (which is what we would recommend), the HD channels should come in full-screen when an HD program is being broadcast (when you see the "HD" icon in the Guide and browse banner). There may be times when non-HD programs are broadcast on HD channels (such as older programs, commercials, or programs which are not filmed in HD) where it would be normal for there to be bars at the top/bottom and/or left/right of the screen.
By default, SD channels will maintain their original 4x3 ratio which will give you black bars on the left/right of the screen. If you "always" want to see the SD channels stretched to fill the screen, press OPTIONS 4-5 on the remote to access Video Settings, and change 4x3 Override to "480p" or "480i". This will output the SD channels at an SD resolution, which your TV should detect and automatically stretch to fill the screen.
Alternately, you can adjust the picture size anytime by pressing the ASPECT button on your Shaw Direct remote. You can stretch or zoom the picture on any channel. Just remember to return this to "Normal" when viewing HD channels.
Let us know if you have any other questions!
What about non-HD channels that are broadcasted in 16:9 ratio (for example CBC's channel 26)? Why Shaw boxes cannot fill them fully into the screen? On my 47" HDTV non-HD but 16:9 ratio channels are in the 37" box with black bars all around. Same on all TV's and boxes in the nearest Shaw store. No video settings on the box or TV can fix it, it is definitely a Shaw's fault as any other 16:9 ratio program from sources other than Shaw (Apple TV, iTunes and Netflix streaming, playing avi, mkv and other formats from USB disk) properly and fully fill the TV screen without any distortion and regardless of resolution (be it iTunes SD or HD, video files in 720 or 1080, Netflix even at the lowest resolution set in preferences). What gives and how to make Shaw to fully fill HDTV screens with non-HD but with 16:9 aspect ratio channels?
non-HD channels are broadcast 480i 4:3 ratio
16:9 picture shunk to fit the 4:3 leaves bars on the top and bottom
When it is put in a 16:9 TV, it is expanded, but because it is 4:3, stretching it bigger leaves the bars on all sides
I mean no disrespect but you obviously have no idea what I'm talking about. I am talking about for example CBC News channel 26 which is broadcasted in the 16:9 aspect ratio (not stretched in any way, shape or form) with all proportions of all elements of the picture not distorted (the circle is a circle, not an oval like in stretched version). This channel is not marked as HD but it is broadcasted in 16:9 aspect ratio as produced - it means Shaw decided to push it to our boxes as non-HD channel in the box in the middle of screen. Again - it is not a 4:3 broadcast stretched to 16:9 - it is 16:9 broadcast shrunk to a smaller 16:9 box. Why won't you switch to CBC News channel 26 (maybe in your area the channel number is different). I am talking about CBC News, Fox News and several other channels recorded in HD with 16:9 aspect ratio but pushed by Shaw to our boxes as smaller (although still in 16:9 aspect ratio) envelope or box. Please check those channels yourself - you will see that proportions in picture are not stretched in any way and not distorted, take measurments and you will see that it is recorded in 16:9 ratio, not a stretched 4:3.
CBC news channel 26 has an HD feed and an SD feed
The SD feed is the same as the HD feed it is just 'shrunk' to fit in a 4:3 SD frame, and sent on channel 26 as 4:3 480i, that is all the data that is there.
If you watch it on a 4:3 TV it will look like it does, with bars on the top and bottom as part of the transmission
Watching it on a 16:9 frame, because the black bars are part of the broadcasted station, you can't get rid of them, all the Shaw hardware sees them as part of the picture, this will be the same on all SD stations that are simply converted from the 16:9 station.
If Shaw gets the HD version of CBC News, the HD version will look like it should, and the SD version will still look like this, as will all HD stations we received as SD.
So, where is the "HD feed" for channel 26 then? I don't have it and tech guys in Shaw store can't find it either. It means Shaw simply pushes to our boxes only the poor "SD feed" of 16:9, while, as per your reply, the "HD feed" exists. Why can't we get the "HD feed" of all 16:9 aspect ratio channels, what is the reason?
Shaw doesn't offer CBC News in HD, it has been requested
This thread was a long discussion with a number of people requesting Shaw carry it...
Re: CBC News Network HD
Try making an official request there that you want CBC News in HD, hopefully Shaw will add it soon.
