From my Shaw account, from the "hotspot" manual, I switch the button to "OFF", but when I check my wifi signal, the "hidden wifi" (that is the Shaw Freedom wifi) is still there.
How do I turn it off?
If you have turned off the hotspot through My Shaw, that should have disabled the network on your modem. Have you tried power cycling the modem to be sure that it's been done? If you still see a Freedom Mobile Hotspot in your list of networks, it may be coming from another nearby modem.
When I turned off my modem, the "hidden network" disappeared. When I turned the modem back on, "hidden network" came back. So the "hidden network" must come from my modem.
It can take a few minutes to update once you have made the changes in My Shaw but it shouldn't take too long to update. What's the name of the network that you are seeing?
There is no name, it is labelled as "hidden network".
One interesting thing, when I go to My Shaw, inside the "Hot spot" area, there is an "On/Off" button. It is at "Off".
When I click on that button, a small window pops up asking me do I want to enable the "Freedom Mobile WiFi". I click "enable". After a while, the window goes away. But that "On/Off" button is still at "Off"
That "hidden network" WiFi signal is still there.
Try doing a factory reset on the modem, then once booted back up, log in and try turning it off again. To do the factory reset, press and hold the reset pin hole on the back of the modem for at least 30 seconds.
This did not work. After the reset, the "hidden network" is still there.
And also, when I then logged in to My Shaw, inside the "hot spot" area, the "On/Off" button is showing as "OFF". Obviously, it is not.
What next now.....
When it is turned on, you should see the network "ShawMobileHotspot". Are you seeing this, or only seeing "Hidden network"?
There is no name. It is labelled as "hidden network". May be it is not broadcasting its SSID.
When I tried to connect to that WiFi, it asked me for the 'Name". I tried using "ShawMobileHotspot", it wouldn't connect.
It sounds like something else is going on, because the Freedom Mobile hotspot would appear in the list of networks as ShawMobileHotspot. Are you using just the Shaw modem, or do you have another router set up as well?
This "hitron" modem is the only one I have. That "hidden network" is definitely coming from this "hitron" modem.
When I turned off the modem or just turned off the "2.4 g" channel, the "hidden network" disappeared. Turned the modem back on, it came back.
Also this network is "open", so it is not secured. Even though its "name" is not broadcasted, sooner or later, some one will find out its SSID, and I will be paying for someone else internet usage. Or they might even break into the modem and do strange things.
Any suggestion how to get rid of this annoying, insecured network?
I'd start with doing a factory reset on the modem. To do that you can hold down the reset button on the back for about ten seconds or so. That will set both the 2.4GHz and 5 GHz networks back to the default names. You can log into the admin panel to modify the password and network names using the login information printed on the sticker on the front.
I had already done that. After factory reset, that ghost network is still there.

Nothing yet, no. The team that is looking into this is typically only in the office Monday to Friday so we should hopefully have some info soon.
Couple of questions from our experts on this inquiry:
- what application/tool were you using while viewing or attempting to connect to this hidden network?
- do you have WPS enabled or disabled?
- were you seeing the network on 2.4G, 5G or both?
I use Windows 10, the WiFi button to list the "hidden network" and try to connect to it.
WPS is disabled on both 2.4g and 5G
My desktop cannot receive 5G. When I disable the 2.4G, the "Hidden Network" goes away. When 2.4G is enabled, it comes back. May be it is on 5G too, I don't know.
One interesting thing is that from My Shaw, the "ON/OFF" button at the "Hot Spot" area is shown as "OFF", when I try to enable the "hot spot", the button still shows as "OFF" no matter how many times I enable it.

Our analysts have tried enabling and disabling ShawMobileHotspot from our end, and they would like to know if the hidden network is still showing. Please note you may need to go into his saved networks and remove the “HiddenNetwork” and then recheck to see if it is gone.
I cannot enable the "hotspot" from "My Shaw" account. The button always shows as "OFF" even when I tried many time to enable it. And the "hidden network" shows up all the time from the WiFi listing.
Also, please give instructions as to how to 'go into his saved networks and remove the “HiddenNetwork” '. Is that somewhere in "MyShaw" or inside the Hitron modem.
Or do you mean from the WiFi option in Windows 10? But I cannot connect to that "hidden network", so there is no way to remove it.
Is the network still showing under your wireless networks that are available?

Let me update you what I have done.
1. Disable 2.4 G makes the "hidden network" go away. Enable 2.4G, "hidden network" comes back.
2. I can now enable / disable the "shawmobilehotspot" from "MyShaw". (I can't do that before)
3. When I enable the "hot spot", network listing from my desktop shows a "Shawmobilehotspot" + that "hidden network"
4. Disable the "hot spot" from "Myshaw", "Shawmobilehotspot" disappears, but that "hidden network" is still there.
5. Both "Shawmobilehotspot" and "hidden network" cannot be connected to.
6. "Shawmobilehotspot" is secured and requires a password.
7. "hidden network" in not secured but requires a name entry.
8. Since both "networks" cannot be connected to, I cannot "forget" about either of them.

Sorry to jump in, but I'm having the same problem with my new modem as well. I do not have a "Hotspot" option under the My Shaw page, and when I asked Support about it, they said it wasn't enabled on my modem. I've done a factory reset, no change. Hidden network, turns on with my router, off with my router, on the same channels, and with the same strength, on both 5G and 2.4G. I'm using Wi-Fi Analyzer to see it, and I'd like it to go away.
BSSID MAC is A6:2e:48:12:6e:66. If it can be turned off, I'd be happier
lukebarone Did you ever get any help with this? I believe these hidden networks (with very similar MACs) are interfering with my router's wifi (even though the shaw modem is in bridge mode...). Anyone have any suggestions??

That's unfortunate. You can find various other mentions of it going back over a year on this forum and others. Using Wifi Analyzer, you can literally walk up to the modem and see the distance go down to 0.0 meters when touching the modem. You turn off the modem, boom, they are gone. I have bridge mode enabled and all wifi disabled via the modem interface (no option to turn off hotspot in my.shaw.ca). Wifi should be disabled 100%, yet the issue remains.
I even see a few of my neighbors have the exact same thing going on with theirs. I see their regular access point and then 2 more at the exact same distance with very similar MAC addresses as mine (and very close to what I see others mention on this forum and elsewhere).
Biggest issue for me is that the channels used by those hidden hotspots are the only channels that aren't overloaded here. And they definitely interfere with my router's wifi.
Pretty shady for this to be enabled without permission and without any kind of real warning (even if it's hidden somewhere in the terms and conditions).
I'll let you know if I find any more info, but it seems even the techs may be in the dark on this one.
