I have had a lot of issues with the sound going out for 10 or 15 seconds. It happens on live tv or recorded. Sometimes it does not happen very often and then the past few days it happens alot. Is anyone else having this issue?
I Have experienced sound dropouts as you describe for 4 years. I have had numerous visits from tech, wiring changed out (from wall plug to enter point on my property, changed shaw boxes several times. Like you said, sometimes it happens a lot, other times not so much. Shaw does finally admit that it happens but does not offer an explaination or a fix. Do you also experience picture freezes to go along with the sound dropouts?
I had this same problem for at least a year, the sound would drop and come back, if I changed channels it would come back immediately, sometimes several times a day or sometimes not at all. I researched and came up with an HDCP handshake problem between the HD box and the HD TV. I changed the HDMI cable from a 6 foot to a 3 foot which fixed the sound drops somewhat. I have a Sony TV, I went to their web site and discovered a firmware update for my TV which amongst other things included a fix for the HDMI hookup between the TV and an HD box. Since I did the firmware update there has been no sound drops, about 4 weeks now, a very pleasant outcome.
INteresting about the firmware update, unfortunately my sony KDL-52XBR4 is not able to update (2007 model). I have had problems with sound since it was new.
Too bad, it does appear to be your TV. I forgot to include other problems with HDMI cables that others might need to know, the cables sometimes unseat themselves slightly. Vibrations from street traffic, foot traffic on the floor, or even the weight of the cable can sometimes pull the cable slightly out of the sockets, re-installing would be a good idea from time to time.
Hi trjones and mfrochon,
If only sound is cutting out, as waznyb has already mentioned here the culprit is most likely a handshake issue with HDMI between the cable box and your TV. In some cases, we have found that changing the Audio Output mode to Pass-Through resolves this. You can change this setting through the hidden User Settings menu which the following document will detail how to bring up Changing the Resolution Settings on your Digital Box. This document shows you how to enter the menu to in order change video resolution, however the same menu will have Additional HDMI Settings and under this you will be able to change the Audio Output to Pass-Through. Let me know if this works for you.
As an alternative solution, using component cables instead of HDMI will still provide HD, and you won't get this problem with the sound.
Jeff: I have just changed this value to flow through and will see if it helps. The recordings on my PVR 3400 have numerous more issues with stuttering and controls lately. There are completely missings portions of the recordings lasting a second or much more. Would this be related to the same sound drop outs?
This may or may not be related to the HDMI handshake issue. When you say there are missing portions, can you be more specific? For example, does the screen go black? If you rewind and play the recording back again, does this happen every time in the same spot on the recording?
Jeff: yes the screen goes black. I have erased those programs so I can not try to watch them again

If you notice this again on future recordings, please try rewinding and see if the interruption can always be replicated on the same spot in the recording, or if you can sometimes play back the same part of the recording without experiencing the issue. This information will be invaluable in narrowing down the source of the problem.
