Following sean's request, I decided to start this new thread pertaining to the new HD channel offerings from Shaw. Please let shaw know how you feel about them.

I cancelled my Shaw services yesterday. Sasktel came out and I am very pleased with the HD content. So many more HD channels, no looking back for me, good luck to the rest of you and I hope things improve someday, but I have my doubts
Of all the channels broadcasted in HD in this great country of ours, Shaw picked those 3?!Seriously? They are the most requested channels? By who? I'm sure 95% of the people in Vancouver never heard of them before. I'm leery of new specialty channels, I was so excited when FX came around but soon came to the sad realisation that all the shows are repeats. Nice try but there is still a lot of work that needs to be done to impress this guy.
No I am not happy with the additions. I commented in the other thread, but I will say it again here: Shaw needs to add the HD equivalents of the SD channes we are already getting before it adds niche channels that repeat the same content over and over.
I to would like to express my displeasure with the recent HiFi Canada HD additions. The fact that these channels were chosen over CBC NN HD is pure ludicrous. CBC NN HD has to have one of the highest channel requests by customers and Shaw has continuously ignored to add this channel since they started to offer it in 2009.
With these HiFi Canada HD additions, people have come to their last straw with Shaw actually listening to their customers and adding HD equivalent channels like:
CBC NN HD
CTV News Channel HD
Headline News HD
NFL Network HD
CBS Sports Network HD
Cartoon Network HD
Peachtree TV HD
Spike TV HD
Your competition offers it and they don't seem to have a problem in listening and respecting customer feedback on what they actually want. Shaw's pricing is very comparable to what the competition offers, but the competition offers 20 to 30 more HD channels. Shaw does not have the appropriate price to value ratio.
People are tired of Shaw's lack of response in adding HD equivalent channels and I for one, if some of this is not corrected in the next few months will be moving on.
Is anybody ?
Just priced Bell with the best package they have and 2 HD PVRs, as well as the MC/HBO pack and Hollywood suite and all the HD channels that Shaw refuses to carry and it will cost me $120.00 a month. Adding the lightning 20 internet plan as well as phone from MTS will cost me another $80.00. That's 200.00 a month which is approx. 40.00 more than I pay for Shaw right now. However I am on a grandfathered plan with Shaw now with BB50 and my BB50 has saturation issues that destroy my speeds at night so the steady 20 mbps from MTS as well as all the additional HD and SD channels from Bell will give me actual value for my money. And I am sure that if Shaw ever does provide decent HD programming, I would lose my grandfathered rate if I wanted to get any new channels anyway. Looking at the Shaw site my rates for what I have now would be $199.00 without any additional channels. The Gateway is the only thing keeping me with Shaw at the moment, but I only owe two thirds of what I paid for it on the easy own (otherwise known as the "we have you now, idiot" plan) and I'm pretty sure I'll be able to sell it once I switch. Checking out other providers' websites really opens your eyes as to how far behind Shaw is in providing HD programming as well as their vaunted pricing argument.
No, I will not be happy with any new channel that hardly anyone has requested. And not until we get CBCNN HD. It is sad that Shaw cannot even be honest about why they added these three channels.
I cancelled movie central in protest today and will not pay one cent for those 3 new channels.the only way Shaw will listen and understand their customers if more people cancel and vote with their wallets.THERE price increase for April is now nil.IT'S sad that customers have get to this point to be heard! or do they even care?.I will be looking for a new provider in near future.
i don,t want a whole lot of HD channels that show endless repeats of shows that have nothing to do with their implied mandate E.g how much history is on the history channel? What I would prefer is to be released from having to buy packages. I only want to pay for channels I actually watch. Of the dozens of HD channels I probably only watch about 6.
ALso I would like to be able to just purchase HD channels and not have to also purchase the basic SD package first.
It is a SAD, but TRUE fact. Value for the money we spend. It`s quality that counts as well as price. When i walk into an electronics store i just don`t settle on the cheapest, I buy something that will last, that has a GOOD track record ! Maybe it`s time to think that way with cable providers. I am not so sure Shaw has a GOOD track record anymore !

A lot of the channels are the SD and HD versions of the same channel and a lot of the channels are Canadian timeshifting channels. Having had a chance to review the channels offered by SaskTel but not Shaw I definitely like having the following:
FX Canada HD (not available in Saskatoon on Shaw)
The Weather Network HD (yes I like this in HD)
Cartoon Network HD (though to be fair the SD version is almost as good as there is little true HD content)
NFL RedZone HD (can't wait to fire this up this fall)
There isn't one Shaw channel (that isn't on SaskTel) that I miss or care if I ever get back. I checked out eqHD, radX and HiFi and quickly concluded that I will likely never watch these channels. These 3 new channels being offered by Shaw are definitely not mainstream fare and I find it hard to believe these were at the top of their customer request lists (at least compared to the other channels which are still missing from Shaw). Being a huge NFL fan, the NFL Network in HD is amazing compared to the SD version.
I'm very disappointed with Shaw's HD offerings. Looking at switching to Telus shortly. They have the HD channels I want, including Hollywood Suite.
Wow, almost worth moving to Saskatchewan, except instead of mowing the grass yesterday I would probably be shovelling snow. Seriously though what equipment does Sasktel use, do they have a decent PVR?
In a word, no!
Not happy with SOD (TV) either! (Made a discussion about it.)
At this point, Shaw's only saving grace is the Gateway and the 6 tuners it offers. I'd consider switching providers at this point but for the Gateway.
buckycat, the SaskTel PVR is a Motorola device. SaskTel uses TV over IP so the PVR has some different functionality than the Shaw PVR, for example when viewing the Weather Network you can click OK and it launches a Weather Network App. It does not support an expander and supposedly can hold 400 hours of SD and 100 hours of HD content. The PVR is actually easier to use than Shaw's and generally works better. One of the main issues with SaskTel's service is bandwidth, apparently there can be issues if you have several TV's and Internet running simultaneously. This isn't an issue for me as I'm keeping Shaw for Internet and I only have one TV running on SaskTel. SaskTel is upgrading its residential network to fibre optic so when complete it will support much higher bandwidth but this is probably 3 to 4 years away from being complete. Generally the SaskTel channels look as good as Shaw though there are a couple of HD channels on Shaw which look a little better in terms of picture detail and quality. SaskTel has nothing like the Gateway system.
The new HiFi Canada HD channels and W-Movies HD are examples of wasted bandwidth and should have never been launched before a basic category channel like CBC NN HD.
The HiFI Canada HD launch just shows you that Shaw has the wrong priorities in their programming teams.
I may watch them but they are not something I'm excited about. I was expecting more honestly.
Here is a partial list of Shaw owned stations that aren't even broadcast in HD. I think that says something.
As mentioned by Tyler in Re: Shaw welcomes eqhd, radX and HIFI to our growing HD lineup:
"For the past number of months these channels have been at the top of the list of customer channel requests relayed to our agents. We track channel requests that are submitted by our agents on behalf of customers on a monthly basis."
The HiFi Canada HD channels were added with only a few months of demand with no hesitation?
How about the 5 years of customer feedback regarding CBC NN HD and Shaw has still not added it. The customer request system can't be that accurate as this channel has been ignored for 5 years. All your competition has CBC NN HD, so what is Shaw's problem?
With the dual tuner Bell HD PVR you can record 2 programs while watching a recorded show or watch 1 live and record 1 at the same time. I know that when I had Bell before, I only had 1 PVR and 1 regular HD receiver and with time shifting we very seldom had conflicts. However if I do switch, I will be getting 2 PVRs this time around so I shouldn't have any conflicts at all, since I'll be able to record 4 and watch 2 recordings at the same time. I like the Gateway, and I don't know how the new code update will work on it, but the Bell receivers I had before were way more responsive and had better options as far as scanning and FF & RW. They don't charge for the first receiver and I can rent the second receiver for only $15.00 a month, so the monthly cost would be the same as I'm paying now for my Gateway and 2 portals on the easy own plan. With the limited selection of HD on Shaw, I never really use all the Gateway tuners anyway.
Gateway or not, if Telus comes to my neiborhood, I`m gone !
their referral system is so very accurate yet SHAW bleeds subscribers quarter after quarter.
Should be giving my 30 day notice to Shaw next Wednesday and signing back with Bell for tv and MTS for phone and internet. Altogether it will cost me 20.00 more a month for the first six months then 50.00 more a month after that. I'll be able to use the internet again and the channel lineup (especially HD) has my mouth watering!! With Bell I will be getting 2 SD receivers (FREE) 1dual tuner HDPVR (FREE) and 1 dual tuner HDPVR (15.00 a month) The programming package call "Best" the MC pack and Hollywood Suite along with timeshifting. All this on a 2yr contract for $109.24 a month. Can't wait for the install!! The price differential isn't horrible since I'm sure that IF Shaw ever brings out decent HD offerings, I would have to forfeit my grandfathered clause to get them, which would actually put Shaw as the more expensive of the options.
I can't believe that NATIONAL news channels aren't in HD. Its a joke right?
It seems like either someone high up at Shaw is mad at CTV/CBC or is just trying to push their local news effort (BC1).
But I guess if phoning in and 'requesting' a channel will help ....
Shaw`s HD lineup is a SAD joke PERIOD ! I know , no NATIONAL news services, or WEATHER services, which after HOCKEY are a national obsession ! There are so many channels MISSING from SHAW`S HD lineup I don`t know if they will EVER catch up, ALL OTHER TV PROVIDERS IN CANADA OFFER CBC NN, TCM HD, HOLLYWOOD SUITE, and DOZENS of others, at a COMPETITIVE PRICE, to SHAW`S ! SHAW does not seem to show any INTEREST IN GIVING THEIR CUSTOMERS, THOSE SAME SERVICES ! Personally I don`t think phoning helps, REQUESTS SEEM TO FALL ON DEAF EARS, UNTIL THE SHAW GODS SPEAKETH !!!
