I have a question. i need to add another desktop computer downstairs. I only have one internet plug in...do i have to order WiFi or have another cable added?
WiFi router - either from Shaw or from a store,
Running an ethernet cable downstairs for your computer or getting a WiFi adapter for your desktop downstairs.
Shaw could set you up with a 2nd modem, I heard rumors months ago about a 2nd modem for High-Speed (7.5) or Extreme (25) at a significantly reduced rate.
It depends on how you'd like to connect the second computer, wired or wireless.
As kevinds mentioned, you could install a WiFi adaptor in your second PC and then utilize a wireless router (self provided/installed), or a wireless modem (can be provided by Shaw, probably installed and configured as well). Wireless adaptors for the second PC can be either external USB connected ones, or internal expansion card styles. There are different speed wireless cards available, ranging from 54 Mbps to 1734 Mbps. 600 Mbps is common nowadays with a technology called Wireless N, which is probably the most common wireless networking gear being sold right now.
If you go wired, all you might need is an Ethernet cable (CAT5E or CAT6) running to the second PC and a network switch depending on which modem Shaw provided you. If your modem only has a single connection as you indicated, you will likely need to purchase your own router anyway.
There are many options based on connectivity preference and desired speed.
