Password Protection for website directory

Shaw currently hosts my website and I wish to password protect a directory.

I tried the HELP link, and although it refers to a security drop-down menu, Shaw appears to have not activated this function, despite advertising it under HELP.

So I saved a .htaccess file and a .htpasswd file in my Public\_private directory where one of my meant-to-be-secure webpages resides.

As a result, when a link to this location from my main webpage is activated a request for an ID and Password dialog box successfully appears, and 1% of the time connects, but 99% of the time results in an arror due to a configuration error.

I have checked the content of both .ht files and used David Walsh's password generator.

Shaw tech support appears to have no experience at all regarding password protection so can offer no help.

Anyone out there with some advice?

I have attached my two ht files as examples (with my website's name changed)
