My mom-in-law has an HD TV and Shaw box in her living room and had her old TV in her bedroom connected to Shaw via a cable and now wants a new HD TV. Does she have to get a second account and box? I can't find any reference on Shaw's site.
She only needs the one account, but yes, a new box for the new TV is in order.
There are a few options available. Shaw - TV:Equipment
The Gateway and 2 Portals would be good in here situation. Especially if she has one of the older HD boxes that is eligible for trade in for the second Portal. (Saving her $138.) What is the current "Shaw box" she has? If it's just the digital (non-HD) box it does not qualify unfortunately. Not all boxes do. (Motorola DCX 3400 and the Motorola DCT 3416 qualify. See link below for more details.)
Or she could get the new 3510 for the new TV. I'm not a fan of this box based off the issues it has had, but the Gateway was once just as bad of an experience when it was new. I have not owned the 3510 and my opinion is based off the reports here of issues. There was a recent firmware update that may have solved some of them. (I haven't been reading that thread much lately.)
The cheapest option is obviously just a 3200 @ $138 which will give her Mpeg4 capable HD content. The Gateway/Portal and 3510 also have this option so I'd recommend one of those options to sort of "future proof" herself. There are several Mpeg4 channels already and more to come.
If you have any questions concerning the Gateway/Portal system, I own one and would be happy to help the best I can. I have no experience with the other current offers.
Here is what qualifies for trade in: PVR Trade-in program
just to correct you, the dcx3200 is an mpeg4 box. It just is not a pvr
oops. I've edited out that part then.
Thanks for the correction mark_vse.
Second HD box, but not a second account, add a new terminal or replace the second one in use now
