EVerything was down about 2 hours ago, phone, tv, everything. Now everything is working except Internet on my desktop, the wifi is working for other devices though.. What's wrong?
Try rebooting your desktop? How is your desktop connected? Wired or wireless?
I'm guessing you just need to establish a new IP. Either release the old one and renew another, or restart the desktop computer, and it will do it automatically.
Hi alavila, were you able to get your desktop connected to the internet? Usually, rebooting your machine should do the trick as kevinds and jackal noted.
Let us know,
no, rebooting did not solve the problem
Okay, thanks for letting me know. The next step to try would be to reset your modem and your router, if you have your own third-party router. To do this, simply pull the power for 15 seconds, plug it back in, give it a minute or so then see if you can access the internet again.
If you do have a third-party router, remove the power from the modem and router then plug the power into the modem first, wait until it comes online (the online light will go solid), then plug the power back into your router.
is the router the wifi?
It depends, you either have one of our wireless modems (it would be a Cisco or an SMC model), which is a modem and a router all-in-one, or you have one of our wired modems (Motorola SurfBoard) and you have your own router (so two devices instead of one).
So to reboot our wireless modem, you would just unplug the power for 15 seconds, plug it back in then try again. If you have your own router, unplug the modem first, then the router, plug the modem back in first, wait until the online light is solid green, then plug your router back in.
That should hopefully work to restore internet to your desktop.
IT didn't work, continuing to say the DNS server lookup failed.
Hi alavila, I'm assuming you have your own router connected to the modem (instead of one of our wifi modems). First run a ping test to see if you have a connection to the internet. Info on how to run a ping test can be found at How to Run a Ping Test (Windows). You can also reset the DNS by the instructions at How to reset the Domain Name System (DNS).
If you still can't get online, try passing the router and connecting your computer directly to the modem.
