Guys I just got a gateway and when I first started using it the menu speed and button response was pretty good. Now after several hours of use guide and buttons stared to be laggy. What can be done to remedy this?
Is that because most TVs don't understand DD? There isn't a reason for them to
Do you find that this kind of laggy behaviour is happening on all of your Portals (if you have more than one)? If it is, or if you have just one Portal, then you can try power cycling the Gateway itself (remove the power for 15 seconds or so then plug it back in). It may just need to be reset, the same as a computer will sometimes need to be restarted in cases where it's getting a bit laggy (although this should of course not be a regular occurrence).
If it's just one Portal though, you can try Power cycling the Portal only. If power cycling the Portal/Gateway isn't working to fix the problem though, it could indicate connectivity issues between the Gateway and the Portal(s) or possibly something else going on, in which case we'd want to take a look from our end.
Hopefully this helps though.
Hmm it looks like rebooting gateway and portal didn't help that much. It seems like I have to press buttons on the remote really hard to get the response. I tried changing remotes also, so you say that there should not be much lag on the gateway menus? I also noticed that when you switch to dolby digital audio output you will not hear sound effects when pressing buttons, is there a fix for that? Btw is the a way to set a screen saver on the box??
Thanks for your time
The sound effects don't work when you have it set to Dolby Digital, there is a message somewhere about that, I think where you set it to Dolby.
Screensaver on the box? Screensaver automatically appears when there is no channel streaming?
Check the Installer Menu, what software versions are you running for everything? Modem, Gateway, and Portals?
sound affects work just fine with dolby digital, at least with 7.1.2
sounds to me like you are not running 7.1.2 as if yet. As kevin mentioned, can you verify if you are.
Ok, must be new then, they definately didn't work on dolby digital 7.0, there was a message when choosing Dolby or Stereo that the sound effects wouldn't work
Guys how do I check my version on gateway?
We can also check for you here from our end - let us know.
I'll message you directly for the account info.
Hey Guys I'm running 7.1.2 version of gateway and portal.
Thanks for checking. Sounds like we'll want to take a look on our end. I've sent a message to your Inbox to get your account details.
Now I know why sound effects work with the Dolby Digital set...
When the Portal is outputting a program, it is ouputting dolby digital in 5.1 (Haven't seen it output a 2.0 signal when watching something yet), when it is stopped (on the screen-saver screen) it is back in 2.0 stereo being outputted. This is the only time that I can get the sound effects to work.
Well on my Samsung tv I can hear sound effects when switched to DD but my Panasonic does not play them in DD but it goes through the Sony soundbar tho.
When watching something you get the sound effects?
Humm.. That shoots down that theory then... oh well
Yes I do on tv that is not connected to any sub or external speakers.
I get the sound effects as well with DD through the TV speakers.
Possibly but I really don't know.
Ok, I looked at my TV's audio options and though DD is listed, it's greyed out and not selectable. Not sure what that means.
All I know is with the Portal set to DD the sound effects do work with my TV.
Mine works fine as well through tv speakers (Panasonic plasma tv)
Guys, I just noticed that you will hear sound effects in DD but only if you stop live TV. When TV program is playing there are no sound effects. There should be a fix for this bug.
I noticed this, as I said, in the previous version, there was a 'notice' in the sound-effects setting that it didn't work with DD, what I have noticed since the update, is my amp doesn't receive a DD signal unless there is a channel playing, just a normal Left/Right signal.
I'm thinking the sound-effects don't get sent in the DD processing, if your TV or audio devices ignores the DD (even when set) then it gets the sound effects
I don't know if it is a bug, or limition of DD
Just to get back on point with where this thread began,
I'm also experiencing the same "lag" issue when navigating menus on all of the gateway portals in my home and have been, to some degree or another, since they were first installed over a year ago.
This forum caught my attention and I have tried to cycle the portals/gateway device by removing the power cords and had no luck.
I'm wondering if someone from Shaw can have a look on their end for me as well as this has been getting increasingly annoying.
Cheers and I'll have my fingers crossed for a DM sometime soon.
I had shaw guys do a reset on their end and that seemed to help.
Thanks erikmarko, did you call Shaw or someone from this forum did the reset? I'm having the same issue and would like to have it looked at too. It worked well right after the 7.1 update and then started lagging again after a few days.
Matt did the reset. Message him directly. You will see his name in this thread.
You can't message Matt directly, only he can message you directly first.
Use the @ symbol and then his username here, or any of the moderators should be able to help you shaw-moderator will message them the message their name is used
Just an update, we got it reset from our end. Thanks though Kevin, good advice on calling us to a thread with the shaw-moderator tag.
soso406, you can let us know here or in the direct message thread if that helped solve the lag issues you've been seeing.
Thanks Matt, it is better now.
Nice, that's good to hear. You can post here again if you see any further lag issues to let us know.
I'm wondering if shaw-matt or any other shaw-moderator could DM me about a reset on the network side of my Gateway system. My menus and guides have been extremely slow/leggy lately. Thanks!
is your remote flashing multiple times on key presses?
if so, it's an indication that your batteries need to be changed And is most likely the cause of this.
No, in fact I've replaced the batteries on all the remotes just recently to make sure that wasn't the case! I had a Shaw technician do a reset of some kind or another earlier this year and that seemed to speed things up for a time. Unfortunately, everything has slowed down again to the point where my key presses are causing undesired selections etc.
Thanks for the reply!
the reason why i asked, is because the term reset for a gateway is a reboot. You can do that by issuing a reboot from the diagnostic screen, or unplugging the power. In fact, on thursdays this happens at 3:00 am, so there is no reason for any slowdown. if this happens, i suspect there is something else going on.
even a reporovision doesn't do anything, as the config files get pushed everyday as well. So this is a strange one.
Would you describe this issue more in line with IR interference and not responding to the remote, or the guide menu's themselves.
one way to determine that is to use the buttons on the front panel, and if you don't see lag, it is likely IR interference.
Cheers Mark, I will try this out when I get home: unplugging the power and also using the buttons on the terminal to check!
awesome. Try first the buttons before the power. I am curious to hear your findings
Just an update, while the buttons on the front of the portals don't appear to work at all (the "ok" button brings up the channel banner right away at the bottom of the screen but nothing else) Unplugging the portals and cycling the power to them seems to have helped a bit.
