Hi, Is the gateway portal advertised at Visions the same item you call HD Digital Box? Is it the same purchasing from Visions as from a Shaw location? Are there any problems?
Good afternoon ecarreiro
A Gateway Portal is one component necessary for the Gateway system. The Gateway unit itself, plus at least one Portal are required.
Typically one would use the term "HD Digital Box" when referring to any of the other available cable boxes which work as standalone devices and do not integrate into the Gateway system.
Purchasing hardware from a third party retailer such as Visions is just fine. Installation of the Gateway system, or the addition of a Gateway Portal post install must be done by a Shaw tech. Any regular HD box or HD-PVR can be self installed and activated online or with the help of our support.
Our web site has a list of the available hardware, have a look here please: Shaw - TV:Equipment
No, the "HD Digital box" usually refers to the HDPVR 3510, (I recommend at this stage you avoid this box like the plague.) and DCX3200-M.
All "Shaw boxes" are the same equipment from Visions but hooking up the Gateway+Portal/s (Excludes other HD stand alone boxes. See below response.) from 3rd party retailers can be slightly more problematic as they are "not in Shaw's system" (Read: pre-provisioned) I bought my Gateway and Portal from London Drugs and though it took a bit longer to get set up they can do it. (The tech may just swap out the box with one of their own that is already provisioned.)
Just to be clear, the Portal is part of the Gateway system and not a stand alone device.
