I have heard / read that there is a new model of portal coming out for the Gateway. When will it be coming out and what is the difference between the new portal and the existing one?
No idea when, could be two weeks, could be two years.
Support for RF4CE as well, but no idea if it would be enabled, or anything done with it...
The biggest difference that I found, was the external IR sensor, which is why I want one
If Shaw does enable RF4CE we might see a remote like this XFINITY XR2 Remote
We should see if it is enabled when they start selling the gateway with the 2150s included .
There don't appear to very many if any third part rf remotes like from Logitech etc but it seems like a good possible moneymaker such as for home automation etc so we'll probably see it (famous last words).
There are a couple Logitech remotes with RF, Harmony 900 is one of them, I was deciding between it and the Harmony One when I got my One.
Logitech does not use the RF4CE which is in the new portal .They use their own proprietary thingee which i believe requires their own rf receiver .Kevinds , what do you mean by "an external ir sensor " ?
Like the DCX series and the Pace branded cable terminals have,
An IR Tether / sensor that connects to the back of the terminal, and can be sticked somewhere (front of TV for example).
So i gather you use it to visually hide the box and have the less intrusive tether showing ? There would be no technical advantage to this i suppose or does it somehow help the signal ? . Where did you find the specs for the 2150 that shows an IR output as i couldn't find it .
The current Portal, has the same port, but it is a blaster (as stamped on the back and confirmed by engineers).
Or if the IR is blocked by something (as mine is), the extra receiver can be used.
The glass-doors of my entertainment unit seem to interfere with the IR signal, for example.
Thanks for your question, yes you are correct in what you read we mentioned the new model on our blog post here: Gateway 7.1 Firmware - ready for liftoff!
In regards to when it will be coming out, we don't have an eta at the moment but we will be sure to share it when the details are released to us.
