My gateway (the box marked Arris?) was unplugged last night and now today my TV isn't working properly. I just have a black screen with a symbol on it (blue square surrounding a circle). What do we do? Oh yeah - we are complete novices!!
Sorry to hear you're not getting a picture at the moment! We can definitely help you get that fixed though.
You mentioned the Gateway unit itself was unplugged, but have you tried removing the power from your Portal(s)? These are the units which connect to your TV directly. If that doesn't work, could you let me know which lights are solid on the front of the Gateway unit?
That didn't work. The solid lights are
I unplugged the portal again and this time I have the "no signal" message dancing across the screen and now the portal said boot, then a few other acronyms and is now displaying the time.

Oh nice, good to hear! I was going to mention that the lights you cited are from the phone modem (coincidentally also manufactured by Arris). That's okay though, those are the lights you want to see.
Hopefully this did the trick, but please let us know if you're having any further issues.
ALso sounds like they have a dcx3510 since there was a boot and probably APP message.
