I have followed the shaw instructions for setting up mail on the mac, I receive email but cannot send. My password works for webmail. Do I need some access from Shaw? Any ideas?
I have been using Mac Mail for a long time with no issues with the following Servers;
Incoming Mail Server: shawmail.ed.shawcable.net
Outgoing Server: SMTP Shaw (check mark in box indicating Use Only This Server)
under edit outgoing server the server name is the same as the incoming server above.
Under the Advanced Tab 110 is in the Port box, SSL is unchecked, Authentication is Password.
The second Mail account I have set up is the same except for outgoing Mail server it is set to smtp (no Shaw after) and it works fine as well. The outgoing server for this account is simply mail.shaw.ca.
In both outgoing accounts the radio button that is marked is Use Default Ports and nothing else is marked on that page. Authentication is set as None.
I don't know why step 14 is setup the way it is as I don't have SSL checked and I can send and receive with no issues.
Try my settings and see if that helps.
I think in your situation purche, it's working because mail.shaw.ca will work on port 25 (default outgoing ports include 25 and 587) without encryption or authentication, as long as you're connected to the Shaw network. Remote Access being enabled though for use with encryption/authentication on port 587 is good though if you frequently connect to the internet through another means.
Good info though, thanks.
