Can an existing website on Shaw's server be set up that it can be accessed only by certain users (who have a password)?
I'm not quite sure what you mean. Are you referring to our webspace sites? If so, then no, we don't offer any kind of password restriction options on those sites. Our PhotoShare site does allow you to upload photos and only share them with certain people if it's photos you are looking to post.
In the strict sense, no, there isn't a way to set a master password for a web page on shawwebspace. There is, however a way to make it private, and only viewable by those invited to do so.
First off, one has to set their web space as being private. First one has to log in to their site (top right of the screen marked Sign In). Once there, click on Settings (top of the screen, first item on the left [same area as Sign In]). One should see this:
It defaults to Public. Click on the radio button beside Private and then click on Save. The next screen looks like this:
Fill in an email address for someone you want to have view your page. They'll get an email with instructions on what to do that looks something like this. Pic has been edited to remove email address, etc.
That appears to be about the only way of doing what jnt is wanting to do.
Does that help any?
Thanks for your input to use shawwebspace, however I have an existing website using Shaw that is very large, with many pages and pdf files, as well as a complex navigation menu etc. Unless there is an easy way to transfer, I cannot see that your idea would work. Thanks anyways.
If you have the older FTP webspace, use htaccess to set passwords where you see fit.
