DVR not working

After talking to technical support this morning and resetting my DVR and expander, it stopped working after ten minutes.  I have been resetting both of them repeatedly over the past year.  I also tried the online activation hoping to update the software but that hasn't made any difference either.  I am ready to throw it out the window.  Does anyone have any suggestions?
