I am having difficulty trying to connect to WiFi and get it on my iPhone 4 which wont recognize ShawOpen as a network. What next?
Have you been able to connect to Shaw Go Wifi in the past? Are you able to connect to any other Networks? It may be that the connection is too far away, how many wifi bars do you have?
I am connected to no other networks, have never tried to connect to Shaw Go WiFi, and am just trying to get my new iPhone connected to the Shaw network, whatever it is. The iPhone simply doesn't seem to recognize the Shaw network for some reason.
Hmm, do you know if anyone else in the area is able to connect to the Shaw Go Wifi zone you are at? And may I ask what zone it is you are at?
There shouldn't be any problem; we're in Oak Bay, Victoria! The iPhone doesn't recognize ShawOpen as a network, yet that is what Shaw tells me to use!
Just to be clear, are you in a location where there should be a ShawOpen connection? Or are you just in Oak Bay, and your phone doesn't see it?
Here is the map of locations, just to confirm you are at one Locations - Shaw Go WiFi - Shaw.ca
We are expanding the number of ShawOpen sites every week. As our sites are now just in business locations, most of our coverage is in areas where there are clusters of businesses, especially in downtown Victoria. If you click on kevinds's link to Locations - Shaw Go WiFi - Shaw.ca, check if you near a ShawOpen location.
I am obviously being very stupid for an old man, but my PC Shaw site tells me to get connectedto Wi Fi by opening my device on Settings, go to Wi-Fi and where I am asked to 'choose a network' enter ShawOpen. The device then tells me it doesn't recognize ShawOpen and I must Dismiss. So how do I get to access the internet on my new iPhone? I'm frustrated and obviously lost.
You are following all the steps correctly to connect to ShawOpen. It is possible that it can't connect as you are not within range of a ShawOpen router. Keep in mind that this list on your phone includes all the routers that are within range, as well as some that your phone might have connected to in the past and is now remembering.
Thanks Lance. Unfortuately my phone does not list any networks other than telus8397 and I don't have a list of the business sites in Oak Bay which might recognize the ShawOpen network.
The list of businesses in Oak Bay who have joined our ShawOpen network is still small but is growing. As mentioned, that list can be found at Locations - Shaw Go WiFi - Shaw.ca.
there are several locations nearby. So, if I go to one of them and follow the steps: open the iPhone Wi Fi setting, enter the ShawOpen network and it is accepted I understand from the Shaw site I am then supposed to open my browser and sign in with my shaw email and password. Presumably then that means on the iPhone?
That is correct. Choose ShawOpen then try to browse on your phone. The first time you do this it will ask for your email and password, then anytime you are in a Shaw WiFi area your phone will connect to it. Be sure to turn on the WiFi on the phone for this to happen though.
I believe it will automatically re-direct any device to the sign-in page that is connected to "Shaw Open" when you open the web browser on your device and try to access a website; iPhone included (Safari browser).
Thanks to all who have tried to help me out in my dilemma. I will try it the next time I'm in one of the locs along the avenue.
