I get the following error.. it used to work fine.
Cannot connect to server news.shawcable.net:119 [501 user Name|pass Password]
I was able to track this down to the cause.
First I tried following the instructions here: http://www.anta.net/misc/telnet-troubleshooting/nntp.shtml
and determined it was not asking for a password then I realized by news client defaulted to 8 active connections which Is more than shaw allows. Once I reduced the connections the errors went away.
Thanks for your help everyone.
Do you have a different IP than you had last time it worked?
It's possible.. I don't keep a log of my IP address changes.
Currently I'm in the 70.72.36.X block.
The reason I asked, was when Shaw starts using a new block, often people can't use the servers because the server doesn't allow access without username/password
Could be way off though
Well it's been many months and it's still asking for a password.
Does Shaw ever read these forums? Because their news servers sure look broken to me.
Hi tailslide, sorry to hear you're still having trouble with our news server. Can you let us know which client you're using? I've checked our database, but I haven't found any examples of this happening for other customers. We may need to look into this further with your account details.
Thanks for posting this update Greg. If anyone else is having the same problem, this will surely be helpful. Glad you got it figured out!
I still use Outlook Express for newsgroups.
Unable to locate the news server. Can someone post the exact address (not "shawnews"), and explain how to reduce the number of connections (as per "tailslide").
Use news.shawcable.net for the incoming and outgoing server name.
For the answer to limit the number of connections, try using tailslide's suggestion above.
Let us know how that works out for you.
