I am having intermittent, but very frequent, inability to have Shaw accept my password to send mail using Apple Mail 4.6 in the Snow Leopard version of Mac OS X. Neither Shaw nor Apple telephone support can find the problem. Help!
Laptop or desktop?
Connected to Shaw internet or non-shaw?
First thing to try would be to use the unauthenticated email server,
mail.shaw.ca Port 25, SSL No, Authentication None
See if that lets you send. Those settings will only work from a Shaw internet connection though. Laptop to a friends DSL connection for example, wouldn't work, or cellular data.
Sorry for the late response. Were you able to resolve this issue yet?
Hi, Heather. I followed the advice of kevinds and it works, I have no more troubles sending e-mail. I know he recommends port 25 without SSL and password authentication, but Shaw telephone support didn't recommend any of those options...and I kept having problems with Shaw's recommended settings. Problem seems to be solved now. Do you foresee problems with kevinds settings?
OK, Matt. The machine in question is my tower, which will never need to go off my cable-modem network. However, for my laptop, which is liable to be used on Wi-Fi or on another Ethernet network, should I leave it's Mail SMTP setting to port 587? How about my iPhone, which runs on Telus cellular network? I've had a few failed send attempts on the iPhone using my Shaw SMTP account.
If your other devices are using port 587 successfully, leave them alone...
But is it possible, especially on your phone, they sit in the Outbox waiting to send until they get back to a Shaw internet connection, and send then?
Hmm, just checked my laptop. Will not send using port 587, using my iPHone as it's wireless hotspot. Won't recognize my password. When I changed to port 25, with SSL off and no authentication, still won't send using wireless hotspot. I had been using another ISP's SMTP server to send out my "Shaw Mail".
When I set up my iPhone a couple of years ago, after failing to get the Shaw SMTP servers to recognize my Mail login, the Telus rep who helped me told me to use smtp.telus.net, and I've never had an issue since, even though telus is not my ISP.
When you use your iPhone as a hot-spot, your computer is connected to the Telus cellular network for internet,
The Port 25 will definately not work, but the Port 587 should if it is setup correctly and Remote Access is enabled for your email account (password strong enough)
OK, is remote access enabled through Shaw webmail? Or from Apple's Mail program?
Were you able to get this issue resolved? As kevinds suggested, with remote access enabled you should be able to send using port 587 and the mail.shaw.ca server.
Let us know if you require any further assistance.
Hi, Ali. Yes, issue has been resolved. Thanks!
