Hello, I am having difficulty with my Mac Mail. My SMTP setting states "shaw.ca offline" and this is preventing me from sending or replying to any emails. Can someone please help me? Thank-you.
I had this problem "out of the blue" yesterday. I checked the Shaw info on setting up Mac Mail. I went through it and it seems now a password is required for the outgoing server where none was before. I also set the outgoing port as the instructions suggested (advanced settings). As soon as I did that I was able to send mail again. In my caae both the incoming and outgoing servers were connected but I was unable to send messages.
Hope this works for you.
Most ISPs have required authentication for SMTP traffic for a few years now. This is to help reduce spam relaying, and protect their systems from service abuse and disruptions. I am surprised in that with the messages above it sounds as if Shaw is only now enforcing SMTP authentication.
johann806's resolution above should resolve your issue.
If you are off-network, SMTP relay requires authentication
If you are on-network, you don't need to authenticate to use the SMTP relay server - this would require almost every user (static IP users excluded) to have an emali address, including visitors, just to send emails
Most ISPs don't have SMTP authentication when using their network
