Right now I have DCX3510 and I'm thinking about geting a Gateway. My question is, if I get the Gateway, can I still use my 3510 and other cable boxes in the house.
Yes you can use other PVR's in the home that are not Gateway including the 3510.
Please let us know if you have any further questions or concerns.
Are boxes such as the DCX 3200/3400 able to function as Gateway portals? I see they're MoCA compatible.
Sorry sebberry, the DCX 3200/3400's aren't compatible with the Gateway even though they are both based on MoCA. But who knows what we might be able to do down the road.
Thanks for that. That's too bad. If they could be made compatible it might help to increase the Gateway adoption rate by making the system a little more affordable. Just a suggestion
Unfortunately as Lance mentioned they are not compatible. The Gateway system uses MoCA slightly differently than standard MoCA devices. This causes problems when the two methods of MoCA communication attempt to connect to eachother.
Maybe someone here can help confirm if there is trade in value for your 3510 for an additional portal.
To complete jackal's comment, if you are interested there is a trade in value for your 3510. If you go with a Gateway, after the initial purchase of the Gateway itself plus the two portals, you would be able to trade your 3510 in for an additional (third) Portal.
I did check into that and there's only one problem. If you have a newer 3510 then you're trading a $365 machine for a $146 one
Agree with calgary88 on the lack of trade in value. I looked into this as well and was shocked that all Shaw would give me for my 3510 (paid $348) was a 138$ portal, and my motorola 3200 (paid $138) was not eligible for trade in. Way to keep long term customers Shaw. Right now I am looking at $500+ to buy the gateway and two portals for my two tv's and then I can trade in my existing PVR for a portal that I have no TV to connect it to.
Might as well look at switching to Telus.
Some good advice from calgary88 and gamerguy if you wanted to go that route (if you're able to find a Gateway plus one Portal and you only wanted the one). Some other options we have as well are to rent the Gateway either with a service agreement for $10 per month or without for $25 per month, or to go with our Easy Own service, where you can purchase it but over 36 months for $14.00 per month (these options are for the Gateway plus two Portals).
Maybe there will be another "secret sale" this Christmas, I got a Gateway and portal for $148.00 a couple years back.
Another secret sale would be the only way I'll upgrade to the Gateway. Frankly if Shaw is going to lock us into their own hardware (vs CableCard, M Card, etc...) the hardware should be free. It should be considered a part of the service delivery infrastructure.
It would be nice if the hardware was free, but I realize that unless there is a contract I would need to pay for it. My issue is that I paid for a PVR priced higher than the gateway system and all Shaw is willing to give me for trade in value is half that value for a third portal (After I purchase a gateway and two portals!) which I don't need.
It does not make me feel like a worthwhile customer. I get the outdated menus and functions because there are no software updates, or I pay for a whole new set of hardware.
Annoying, but then again I paid over $700 for a PVR that won't decode the new MPEG4 channels.
Perhaps they're not basing the trade in value on the hardware price but rather the functions of the device. You're essentially swapping one PVR for another (with more functionality).
When they were made, Arris and Motorola were very separate companies, so they wern't made to be compatible
Go to one of Shaws authorized dealers. They sell the portal and the gateway separately. You can get one portal and the gateway for almost the same price as the 3510. That's what I did. It was well worth it.
That's what I did as well calgary88. (Gateway+1Portal but no trade in.) Seeing I sold my second TV to pay for the Gateway and Portal.
Got it on sale as well. (It was $2 more than what the 3510 is currently going for.) So watch for sales at Future Shop, London Drugs/wherever.
If you don't go to Telus....
