I get a box on my screen that says
AN ERROR OCCURRED
NO APPLICATON FOCUSED
and I cannot get rid of it
This actually sounds similar to a few other posts at Why won't this error message disappear?
and DCX3510-M Error - No Application Focused.
As per the suggestion of the inimitable [shaw]ali, reset the unit by pressing the "exit" button once, then pressing "OK/Select" a few times. Or if that doesn't work, hold down the power button on the remote for 20-30 seconds.

It sounds like your TV may not be on the correct input for your cable box. What are you seeing on the front display of your cable box now (for example, a channel number, the current time), or if you cable box doesn't have a display what lights are you seeing?
The first thing to check is that the box is still powered on. Next, you'll need to ensure your TV is on the correct input. You may be able to use the Video Source button on your Shaw remote to check that, but if that doesn't do anything I'd recommend looking on the original remote that came with your TV, there will usually button labelled Source or Input. Try using that button to adjust the input until you have picture again.
